Remove Distractions

Description

For this project, you'll remove details from an image you don't want in the shot. For example, a tree or someone in the background. For this assignment, you'll need to remove distractions from 2 different images. You don't have to worry about copyright for this project, but if you want to publicly share your work, you should use legal images.

Requirements

  • Submit 2 before images (before you edited them) and 2 after images (after you edited them). The after images should have things removed from them.

STEP 1: GET PHOTOSHOP

Install Photoshop on your computer if you don't have it already. You get it for free with your student emails while we're schooling at home.

  1. Go to Adobe's Creative Cloud Website HERE
  2. Sign in with your student email and password.
  3. Once in, you can download and install the software shown. You need Photoshop for this project, but you can install any of the available programs to try out.

STEP 2: FIND PHOTOS

You need 2 different photos for this project. Both should have things you want to remove.

Ideas & Tips:

  • Look through your own photos. Many of the photos you'll find online already have things edited out of them. You can still use online images, it just may be harder to find one you want.
  • Look for pictures that have SMALL things to remove. We're not talking about half of the image. In the image to the right, I might remove the people in front.
  • Some websites, like Pixabay, will have a download image button. If you're using a copyrighted image, you may need to just right-click on the image and go to Save Image As. Regardless of how you download the image, make sure you save it somewhere on your computer that you'll be able to find, such as on your Desktop or in your Documents folder.

STEP 3: OPEN IMAGE

The computer will probably not open your images in Photoshop by default. Here's how to do it:

  1. Find the images on your computer.
  2. Right-click each of the images, go to Open With > Photoshop

OR

  1. Open Photoshop first
  2. Go to File > Open and find your images

STEP 4: FOLLOW TUTORIAL

Now, you just need to follow the tutorial! Click the link below for the full tutorial.

Note: if you ever can't find a window or panel you're looking for, go to the top of the screen, click Window, then whichever panel you're looking for, such as Layers.

Also: if you get stuck, you should try googling what you're stuck on. There are soooooo many Photoshop guides - if this one is confusing to you, use Google as your personal guide! You can also contact me, obviously. Google will just be faster.

STEP 5: SAVE

When you're working in Photoshop, the app will want to save the file as a Photoshop file or the same type of file. You'll need to submit your files as PNG files. Here's how to do it:

  1. Go to File > Save As...
    • It is extra important to use Save As for this project - it will save a new copy, so you'll still have the originals to submit!
  2. Under Format, choose PNG
  3. Make sure you're saving it in the folder you want
  4. Click Save
  5. Choose Large file size
  6. Click OK

STEP 6: SUBMIT

To submit your work:

  1. Open the week's assignment in Google Classroom
  2. Click the Add or create button on the upper right-hand side
  3. Choose File
  4. Find the saved images on your computer. You'll probably have to add them one at a time.
    • Note: you need to submit 4 images in total, 2 before images and 2 after images!
  5. Lastly, click Turn in!
