Mini Project: Travel Ad

STEP 1: LOCATION

First, decide on the location you'd like to use for your advertisement. Here are some ideas:

  • New York
  • Paris
  • Japan
  • Hawaii
  • London
  • Los Angeles
  • Thailand
  • India
  • Italy
  • Egypt

STEP 2: FOOTAGE

You need to start by downloading the video files you want to use. In the end, your video will need to be 30 seconds to a minute long. Here are some websites you can use to find stock footage:

STEP 3: MUSIC

Next, you'll want to find some music for your advertisement. Here are some websites you can use to find free music:

STEP 4: MOVING FILES

The videos you downloaded are probably in your Downloads folder. You need to move them to your network drive in a new folder for this project. Here's what you should do:

  1. Open Finder
  2. Open your Downloads folder
  3. Open your network drive
  4. In your network drive, inside your Digital Media folder, create a new folder called: Travel Ad Project
  5. Drag the videos and music files you downloaded from your Downloads folder to your new Travel Ad Project folder

STEP 5: CREATE VIDEO FILE

Launch Adobe Premiere, and select Create New or New Project. Then, follow these directions for the settings:

  1. Name your project: Your Name Travel Ad
  2. Change the location of the file. Click Browse. Find your network drive, open the Digital Media folder inside, and then open the Travel Ad Project folder. Then click Choose.
  3. Change Capture Format to HDV
  4. Click OK

STEP 6: ADD MEDIA

Now that you have your project created, you need to add the music and video files you found. Here's how to do this:

  1. Click on the Editing tab at the top of the window. You don't need to be in the Learning workspace anymore.
  2. The bottom, left-hand corner area is your Project Panel. That's where you add your media. There are a variety of ways to import your media. The next step explains one way.
  3. On the top of the Project Panel, make sure you have selected Project: Your Name Travel Ad.
  4. Open your network drive > Digital Media > Travel Ad Project folder. From that folder, click & drag your video and audio files into the Project Panel.
  5. You should now see your video and audio files in the Project Panel.

STEP 7: CREATE A SEQUENCE

Next up, you need to create a sequence so you can edit your footage together.

  1. Drag one of your video files from the Project Panel and into the Timeline Panel.
  2. Doing this will create a sequence based on the settings of that video file.
  3. You'll see a new file pop up in your Project Panel. It will have the icon to the right on it.
  4. Right-click on that file, select Rename, and name it: Travel Ad Sequence.

STEP 8: START EDITING

Next up, you need to create a sequence so you can edit your footage together. Check out the video on the right to help you get started.

STEP 9: EXAMPLES

Here are some professional examples you can take a look at for ideas:

STEP 10: ADD TEXT

You'll want to add some text to make your advertisement make sense. Maybe you'll want to include the travel destination or some highlights. Check out the video to the right to see how to add text.

STEP 11: ADD TRANSITIONS

Between most of your clips, you'll probably want transitions. You should at least have transitions at the beginning and end of your ad. Check out the video to the right for how to create and alter transitions.

STEP 12: CHECK THE RUBRIC

The rubric is attached to the assignment in Google Classroom. Open up the assignment there, & click on the rubric to take a look at how you'll be graded. You should make sure you're going to get all of the points possible.

STEP 13: EXPORT

Now that you're done, you need to save your ad as a playable video file. Check out the image to the right for a visual. Here are the steps:

  1. Go to File > Export > Media (or press Cmd + M)
  2. In the window that pops up, change the Format to H.264
  3. Change the Preset to Match Source - High bitrate
  4. Check the Output location - it should be saving it in the same folder as your other travel ad project files
  5. Click Export at the bottom

STEP 14: SUBMIT

Go to Google Classroom, and find the assignment. Click the Add button, then find your file in your network drive (it won't be there if you didn't save it there).

STEP 15: EXTRA TIME?

Try learning to do one of these fancier techniques for your ad's text. There's a video linked to each of these. You can resubmit your project when you're done if you want, but you don't have to.
