Yearbook Photo Contest

Description

For this project, you'll submit 2 photos to the Balfour Great Shot Photo Contest. Photos will be scored based on these two categories:

  1. Most interesting and original photograph, representing yearbook activities or daily life while out of the classroom
  2. Overall quality of the photograph (including photo composition techniques)

Requirements

  • Take, edit, and submit 2 photos for the contest.
  • You'll also submit the two photos you enter to Mrs. Prosser.

STEP 1: TAKE PICTURES

Your goal is to take interesting photos that show what life is like for students while schooling at home. Tips:

  • You can use whatever camera you have, including a phone.
  • Take at least 5 pictures you like. It's good to have options.
  • Think about composition, especially the Rule of Thirds (Google it if you don't remember it - it's used in the image to the right).
  • Generally, you want to keep the light behind you when you're taking photos. Although, there are times you might want to shoot into the sun to make an effect like a silhouette.
  • If you have brothers or sisters, use them as subjects! If they normally attend school, they'll be doing lessons at home as well.
  • Get faces in the images, especially faces with interesting expressions.

STEP 2: EDIT PICTURES

You need 2 different photos for this project, but you may want to try editing around 5 different photos to see which look best after editing. You can use whatever editing software you want, such as an app on your phone, but you can also download and install Adobe Photoshop for free for the rest of the school year. Here's how:

  1. Go to Adobe's Creative Cloud Website HERE
  2. Sign in with your student email and password.
  3. Once in, you can download and install the software shown. You need Photoshop for this project, but you can install any of the available programs to try out.

STEP 3: SAVE

For the contest, you need to save your files as high-quality PNG files.

If you're editing in Photoshop, here's how to save as a PNG:

  1. Go to File > Save As...
  2. Under Format, choose PNG
  3. Make sure you're saving it in the folder you want
  4. Click Save
  5. Choose Large file size
  6. Click OK

STEP 4: SUBMIT - CONTEST

You can only submit one photo per day, so you'll have to follow these steps twice:

  1. Go to Balfour Great Shot Photo Contest
  2. Fill out the form on that page.
  3. For category, you can choose either the "Out of the Classroom" category, which includes high school, or you can choose the "K-8" category. It's up to you. It's hard to say which category is best to go with.
  4. When done, click Enter!

STEP 5: SUBMIT - GOOGLE CLASSROOM

To submit your work:

  1. Open the week's assignment in Google Classroom
  2. Click the Add or create button on the upper right-hand side
  3. Choose File
  4. Find the saved images on your computer. You'll probably have to add them one at a time.
    • Note: you need to submit 2 images in total, the two you submitted.
  5. Lastly, click Turn in!
